This pad also launched 51 space shuttle missions, Apollo 10, Apollo Soyuz and the Skylab missions. The rehabilitated flame trench and the new flame deflector are exposed to a peak temperature of 2,200 degrees Celsius at the start. More than 96,000 bricks were laid on the walls on the north side of the Flammengraben during the renovation. The flame trench is 450 feet long, which is the length of one and a half American football fields. The flame arrester consists of about 150 steel plates, each weighing up to 4,000 pounds.
