22 August 2018, Germany, Leipzig: At the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) employees observe a laser beam that measures aerosols in the atmosphere at altitudes of up to 15 kilometres. With the ESA satellite “Aeolus“, which has just been launched, these data and measurements are to be carried out over the next few years using mobile measuring stations in Chile and continuous comparative measurements when the sites are flown over. May 18, 2022, Spain, Spain: Maps of the average temperature at two meters above the surface between May 18 and 22 at 12:00 noon. Some areas of the peninsula will touch 40 degrees Celsius and tropical nights. According to the AEMET, this episode could become the earliest heat wave in Spain since records have been kept. These high temperatures are due to a concurrence of factors and, in this case, the Peninsula will be under the influence of an anticyclonic ridge, an area of high pressure in the middle and upper levels of the troposphere in which downward air movements occur...18 MAY 2022..Europa Press..05/18/2022 (Credit Image: © Europa Press/Contacto via ZUMA Press)、クレジット:©Europa Press/Contacto via ZUMA Press/共同通信イメージズ ※Spain Rights OUT

June 20, 2022, Alberta, Canada: A panorama of NLCs ââ¬âànoctilucent clouds ââ¬âàaka PMCs or polar mesospheric clouds, taken on June 20, 2022 about 11:40 pm MDT, from home in southern Alberta. After many cloudy nights and some clear nights with no NLCs, this was my first sighting since June 1. The bright luminous mesospheric clouds lit by sunlight at high altitude contrast with the dark tropospheric clouds to the left at low altitude. ..The bright star Capella in Auriga, low in the north and circumpolar from my latitude of 51ð N, is left of centre. The stars of Perseus are at upper right. ..This is a panorama cropped from 9 segments of 5-second exposures, with the RF24-105mm lens at f/4 and 80mm, and with the Canon R5 at ISO 400. May 6, 2023 - Canada - More than 100 wildland fires raged across Western Canada in early May 2023, forcing tens of thousands of people in Alberta and British Columbia to evacuate. The fires destroyed homes and produced chimneys of smoke that reached into the upper troposphere. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA‘s Terra satellite acquired this image (above) of smoke billowing from fires in the two Canadian provinces on May 6, 2023. On that day, officials in Alberta declared a provincial state of emergency. (Credit Image: © NASA Earth/ZUMA Press Wire Service/ZUMAPRESS.com)、クレジット:©NASA Earth/ZUMA Press Wire Service/共同通信イメージズ

Series of Rare Disturbances in the Stratosphere

August 5, 2024 - Antarctica - Unlike in the Arctic, which experiences sudden stratospheric warming events about once a year, the polar vortex in the Southern Hemisphere is typically much less active. “Sudden warming events happen in the Antarctic once every five years or so, much less frequently than the Arctic,“ Coy said. The reason for this, Coy added, is likely that there is more terrain in the Northern Hemisphere that can disrupt wind flow in the troposphere-the layer of air closest to the ground. These large-scale tropospheric weather systems move upward into the stratosphere and disrupt the polar vortex.
