Dissection of aortic valve from donor human heart

Aortic valve donation (image 1 of 3). Gloved hand of a surgeon dissecting a donated human heart to remove the aortic valve. The aortic valve (white, at centre) lies between the left ventricle (main pumping chamber) of the heart and the aorta, the body‘s largest artery. Its function is to allow blood to flow out of the chamber but to prevent backwash. The valve can be donated and transplanted into patients whose own valve is malfunctioning due to disease. (See photo number M560/246 for a picture of the dissected aortic valve, and M560/247 for the valve packaged for storage.)、クレジット:SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/共同通信イメージズ

    2006年10月11日
    Abdominal aorta

Abdominal aorta, historical anatomical artwork. The abdominal cavity of this torso has been dissected to give an anterior (front) view of the aorta (orange, inverted Y- shape), the largest artery in the human body. The aorta originates from the left ventricle of the heart (not seen), descends through the thorax and diaphragm (top), and into the abdomen. Here it branches into two common iliac arteries, providing blood to the pelvis and limbs. The spinal column (white, centre) can also be seen. This illustration is taken from the 19th century French textbook The Atlas of Human Anatomy and Surgery by J. M. Bourgery and N. H. Jacob.、クレジット:SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/共同通信イメージズ

走査型電子顕微鏡写真 Heart valves and strings, SEM

Heart valves and strings, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This dissection shows both the mitral valve (centre) and the aortic valve (upper centre). The mitral valve lies between the left ventricle of the heart (bottom) and the left atrium (not seen). The aortic valve (upper centre) is where the blood passes from the left ventricle into the aorta (top right). Also seen here are the heart strings (chordae tendineae, thread-like), the papilliary muscles (thick bands at lower right and left), and the trabeculae carneae (columnar structures on the inner wall of the ventricle).、クレジット:SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/共同通信イメージズ
