In 1959, municipal workers discovered a complex and ancient underground network inside Lyons La Croix-Rousse hill. Keeping the discovery secret from the public, they explored the 2.5 kilometers of underground tunnels, identifying 32 short tunnels that branch off a main tunnel or vertebra, much like the skeleton of a fish, giving birth to its moniker Arêtes de Poisson or FishBones. 建築家の青山周平さんは１９８０年に広島県で生まれ、中学時代に初めて中国を訪れた。当時は中国で働くことになるとは思いもしなかったが、２００５年に建築関連の修士号を取得した後、日本人が経営する北京の建築設計事務所でインターンとして勤務した。０８年の五輪を控え、開発に沸く都市で自分の力を発揮したいと考え、腰を落ち着けることにした。北京に来たばかりの頃は高層マンションに住み、東京と変わらない生活を送っていた。雑然とした古い路地に目を向け、胡同で長く暮らすうちに、中庭にある多くの木で夏の日差しが遮られ、葉が落ちる冬には部屋に日が当たることに気付いた。建築と自然の相互作用は青山さんにとって大きなヒントとなり、住民が公共空間を共有する日常生活からも設計のインスピレーションを得た。縦横に交差する胡同は元代から北京の特色ある都市構造を形成してきたが、青山さんは一部の家の狭さや古い設備が現代の暮らしに合わなくなっていると感じた。有名テレビ番組に出演し、胡同の小さな古い家屋を巧みに生まれ変わらせたことが注目され、インターネット上で「胡同リノベーションの魔術師」と呼ばれた。北京市は近年、旧市街の保護に注力し、復元と修繕・保護を進めている。青山さんが設立した建築設計事務所は機会を捉え、多くの老朽化した小区（居住区）のリノベーションを受注した。中国人の同僚と共に新たな素材と技術を駆使し、胡同の課題解決に向けて努力している。青山さんは、胡同をリノベーションする意義は大きく、若者を含む各年齢層の住民を引き付けるのに役立つと考えており、「多様性のある生活空間を維持することは都市の発展に非常に重要」と話す。長年にわたり中国市場に深く関わり、中国の建築業界の発展を目の当たりにしてきた。働き始めた頃、大都市では大型の商業複合施設や住宅などのプロジェクトが中心だったが、ここ数年は老朽化した小区のリノベーションが増えている。住宅・都市農村建設部のデータによると、１９～２４年に計２８万カ所の小区で工事が始まり、４８００万世帯が恩恵を受けた。近年の地域振興に伴い、青山さんのチームは農村の古民家を民宿にする事業を開始した。さまざまなプロジェクトを手がける中で、青山さんは中国の建築業界が日々規範化され、専門的になったと感じている。顧客は設計理念と価値観の一致をより重視しているとして「建築は時代を映す鏡」だと表現した。＝配信日：２０２５（令和７）年５月２...
