    Landscape with Mountains. Artist: Antonio d‘Enrico Tanzio (Tanzio da Varallo) (Italian, Riale d‘Alagna 1575/80-1632/33 Novara). Dimensions: sheet: 9 5/16 x 12 11/16 in. (23.6 x 32.2 cm). Date: n.d..This landscape with its rugged mountain peaks and gently rolling plains delineated by luscious brush seems much like that of the Piedmont and the northwest part of Lombardy, the regions where the career of Tanzio da Varallo unfolded. The view is, in fact, evocative of the site of the artist‘s most famous work, the frescoes within the shrines of the Sacro Monte of Varallo. The drawing appears to have been done on the spot, which was an extremely rare practice for Italian artists of this period. Date: 1532-33.These posthumous portraits of the Saxon electors Friedrich III, the Wise, and Johann I, the Constant belong to a series of sixty such portrait pairs, ordered by Johann I‘s son and successor, Johann Friedrich I, the Magnanimous, when he became elector in 1532. He intended the portraits of his father and uncle to serve as instruments of propaganda. The accompanying laudatory poems emphasize the passage of Saxon electoral preeminence from Friedrich to Johann, thereby implying the legitimacy of Johann Friedrich‘s own electorate. Completed in 1533, the extensive series demonstrates the speed and efficiency of which the Cranach workshop was capable. This connection was first proposed by John Gere, while the attribution of the drawing to Zuccaro is due to Jacob Bean (Curatorial Files, April 1962). Date: ca. 1814.This is a compositional study for David‘s large canvas of the same subject, signed and dated 1814 and today in the Musée du Louvre, Paris. The drawing was executed in two distinct stages, offering a view into the artist‘s creative process. Over a detailed, lightly sketched composition David reworked the sheet in a darker, more emphatic black chalk, refining and simplifying the landscape and figures, especially on the right side. Leonidas, leader of the Spartan troops, is shown calm and unwavering as his men prepare to battle the Persians at the pass of Thermopylae. Many of the poses and figural types used by David refer to classical prototypes, as does the practice--debated during David‘s time--of depicting classical warriors nude. By the time of this canvas in 1873, Daubigny, had, in turn, assimilated their high-keyed palette, evident in the vivid green foliage and bright blue sky. Date: ca. 1778.In the spring of 1778 Goya submitted an oil cartoon depcting the blind guitatist to the Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Barbara in Madrid for it to be woven into a tapestry. Because of the complexity of the design it proved too difficult for the weavers to interpret and alterations had to be made. This etching - his largest ever and the only print after one of his own works - is thought to record his first design before he modified it. The modified cartoon is today in the Museo del Prado, Madrid. Goya recognized the ability of the etching medium to convey minute detail and in this print, he emphasises the different expressions of those surrounding the guitarist.
