Nettapus coromandelicus, Print, Pygmy goose, The pygmy geese are a group of very small “perching ducks“

Nettapus coromandelicus, Print, Pygmy goose, The pygmy geese are a group of very small “perching ducks“ in the genus Nettapus which breed in the Old World tropics. They are the smallest of all wildfowl. As the “perching ducks“ are a paraphyletic group, they need to be placed elsewhere. The initially assumed relationship with the dabbling duck subfamily Anatinae has been questioned, and it appears they form a lineage in an ancient Gondwanan radiation of waterfowl, within which they are of unclear affinities. An undescribed fossil species from the late Hemphillian (5.04.1 mya) of Jalisco, central Mexico, has also been identified from the distal end of a tarsometatarsus. It is only record of the genus in the New World., 1700-1880.、クレジット:Album/quintlox/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

Hubble photo of a small portion of one of the largest known star-birth regions in the galaxy

Hubble photo of a small portion of one of the largest known star-birth regions in the galaxy, the Carina Nebula. Three light-year-tall towers of cool hydrogen laced with dust rise from the wall of the nebula. Scorching radiation and fast winds (streams of charged particles) from super-hot newborn stars in the nebula are shaping and compressing the pillar, causing new stars to form within it. Streamers of hot ionized gas can be seen flowing off the ridges of the structure, and wispy veils of gas and dust, illuminated by starlight, float around its towering peaks. The denser parts of the pillar are resisting being eroded by radiation much like a towering butte in Utah痴 Monument Valley withstands erosion by water and wind.、クレジット:World History Archive/ニューズコム/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用に関してはお問合せください。

    A Maid Asleep.

A Maid Asleep. Artist: Johannes Vermeer (Dutch, Delft 1632-1675 Delft). Dimensions: 34 1/2 x 30 1/8 in. (87.6 x 76.5 cm). Date: ca. 1656-57.This picture is probably the earliest in which the Delft painter treats his favorite theme of a young woman, occasionally with a male companion, in a domestic interior. An overdressed maid has dozed off after entertaining a visitor (two glasses, a pitcher, and a jug may be seen in the jumbled still life). The painting above her depicts Cupid unmasked, an oblique explanation of her dreamy smile. Radiographs show that Vermeer originally painted a man in the background and a dog to the lower right. By replacing these motifs he made the amorous theme less obvious, quite as his remarkable passages of observation obscure his debts to contemporary painters like Nicolaes Maes. In her research she demonstrated that the direction of emission of beta rays in radioactive decay is correlated with the direction of spin of the emitting nucleus, showing that parity is not conserved. This confirmed Tsung Dao Lee‘s theory. Lee and Yang shared the Nobel prize for their work while Wu was overlooked but received the 1978 Wolf Prize in Physics for her work. Nakajima Hon-machi was 100-700 metres from the centre of the atomic blast

Nakajima Hon-machi was 100-700 metres from the centre of the atomic blast that was unleashed on Hiroshima during the Second World War. The ‘Little Boy‘ atomic bomb directly killed 80,000 people when it was first dropped but injuries and radiation effects brought the total number of casualties to 90,000-140,000 by the end of the following six months. The shockwave from the attack completely destroyed 69% of the city‘s building structures.、クレジット:World History Archive/ニューズコム/共同通信イメージズ※エディトリアル使用のみ。広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用に関してはお問合せください。

Chien-Shiung Wu and Wallace Brode, 1958

Chien-Shiung Wu and Wallace Brode. At left is Chinese-US physicist Chien-Shiung Wu (1912-1997), with US chemist Wallace Reed Brode (1900-1974) at right. Born in China, Wu moved to the USA in 1936, becoming a physics professor at Columbia University, New York, in 1957. She played a key role in the particle physics experiments that led to the award of the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics to her colleagues Lee and Yang, but was herself overlooked. Wu experimentally confirmed other particle theories, and received the 1978 Wolf Prize in Physics for her work. Brode was Science Adviser to the US Secretary of State from 1958 to 1960, and received the Priestley Medal in 1960. Photographed on 15 March 1958.、クレジット:SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/共同通信イメージズ

    Chien-Shiung Wu, Chinese-US physicist

Chien-Shiung Wu (1912-1997), Chinese-US physicist, with a group of prize winners. Born in China, Wu moved to the USA in 1936, becoming a physics professor at Columbia University, New York, in 1957. In 1956, Wu and Tsung-Dao Lee experimentally confirmed a theory that parity is violated during weak radioactive decay, overturning many basic assumptions of particle physics. The 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Lee and Yang for this work, while Wu was overlooked but received the 1978 Wolf Prize in Physics for her work. Wu experimentally confirmed other particle theories, as well as studying muonic atom X-ray spectra. Photographed in 1958, at Columbia University, with winners of the Science Talent Search.、クレジット:SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/共同通信イメージズ
