    Biodiversity in the forest

29 January 2019, Brandenburg, Sauen: Monique Müller, forester of the August Beer Foundation, ties a mark around the trunk of a tree hazel (Corylus colurna). The tree hazel is the large representative of the well-known hazelnut bush. Employees of the Brandenburg State Forest Service and the Humboldt University of Berlin harvested so-called “Reiser“ (rice harvesters) in the crowns of the tree hazel for the propagation of this tree species. The forest district Sauen has a very long and traditional history, which was founded before August Biers (1861-1949). August Bier acquired the Sauen forest estate in Brandenburg in 1912 as a nationally and internationally famous surgeon between Beeskow and Fürstenwalde. The forest district Sauen has a very long and traditional history, which was founded before August Biers (1861-1949). August Bier acquired the Sauen forest estate in Brandenburg in 1912 as a nationally and internationally famous surgeon between Beeskow and Fürstenwalde. Forest work with the back horse

19 March 2020, Brandenburg, Oderberg: Ralf Fangerow pulls an oak trunk over the forest floor in the Breitefenn forest district of the Brandenburg Forestry Office with the riding horse Bubi. With the help of the packhorse, felled wood is pulled from the dense forest to the back lanes. The packhorses, mostly cold-blooded horses, can pull logs of up to one ton over the forest floor. Heavy machinery would compact the sensitive forest soil and destroy its structure forever.

13 May 2020, Brandenburg, Sauen: Three young peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) sit on the forest floor in the Sauener Forst. On the same day, the offspring were ringed in a nest of peregrine falcons. The two volunteers Silvio Herold and Winfried Nachtigall from the Arbeitskreis Wanderfalkenschutz e.V. (AWS) took three chicks from the nest in the top of a mighty pine tree. The 26-day-old young peregrine falcons were measured, weighed and fitted with two rings each. During this time the parent birds circled over the forest area. After 20 minutes, the three birds were returned safely to their nest. The Sauen forest district, with its approximately 460 species of shrubs and trees, has a very long and traditional history, which was established even before August Bier‘s (1861-1949) times. 20 November 2020, Brandenburg, Sauen: KOMBO - The two-part picture combo shows the soil profile with the dark humus layer in a mixed forest (l) and a coniferous forest (r) in the Sauen forest district of the August Bier Foundation. Sustainable forest conversion has been carried out in the August Bier Foundation‘s forest district for over 100 years. Students from the Ecology and Environmental Planning course at the Technical University of Berlin gain various insights into the soil structure in the forest, such as the effects of climate change and CO2 storage. Special attention is paid to the humus layer of the forest soil. The students compare this dark, upper soil layer in a pure pine forest and a mixed forest of coniferous and deciduous trees, which was converted about 100 years ago. The Sauen forest district, with its about 460 species of shrubs and trees, has a very long and traditional history, which was established even before August Bier‘s (1861-1949) times.、クレジット:ZB/DPA/共同通信イメージズ
