architectural feature from the Doge‘s Palace in Venice

(Detail) architectural feature from the Doge‘s Palace in Venice, Italy. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the Republic of Venice. Its two most visible facdes look towards the Venetian Lagoon and St. Mark‘s Square, or rather the Piazzetta. The use of arcading in the lower stories produces an interesting ‘gravity-defying‘ effect. There is also effective use of colour contrasts. largely constructed from 1309 to 1424, designed perhaps by Filippo Calendario. It replaced earlier fortified buildings of which relatively little is known. Giovanni and Bartolomeo Bon created the Porta della Carta in 1442, a monumental late-gothic gate on the Piazzetta side of the palace. This gate leads to a central courtyard. The palace was badly damaged by a fire on December 20, 1577.、クレジット:World History Archive/ニューズコム/共同通信イメージズ

A Sermon in a Village Church.

A Sermon in a Village Church. Artist: Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, Siegen 1577-1640 Antwerp). Dimensions: 16 5/8 x 22 9/16 in. (42.2 x 57.3 cm). Date: ca. 1630.This sheet, a relatively recent addition to Rubens‘s drawn oeuvre, is exceptional in several ways. Even if it seems to have been slightly cropped (especially at the left and the top), it remains one of the artist‘s largest works on paper. Its technique is much richer than that of most of his other drawings, combining chalk and paints, and gives the work the appearance of an oil sketch. The subject matter may be considered unique for Rubens. In a simple village church, a Catholic priest can be seen preaching to farmers and peasants--men on the left and women on the right--who listen with varying degrees of attentiveness.、クレジット:Album/Metropolitan Museum of Art,NY/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

Date: 1624.Although recently published as a work by Werner van den Valckert (born about 1585, died 1627/28), this panel is almost certainly a comparatively early work by another Amsterdam portraitist, Nicolaes Eliasz. At the death of the conservative Cornelis van der Voort (born about 1576, died 1624), Eliasz. and the young Thomas de Keyser (see A Musician and His Daughter of 1629, 64.65.4) became the leading portraitists in Amsterdam until Rembrandt arrived in the winter of 1631-32. Magic Lantern slide circa 1900 hand coloured

Magic Lantern slide circa 1900 hand coloured. Titled Cities and places of interest in the Mediterranean.42—THE ENTRANCE TO VALETTA GRAND HARBOUR. We here are presented with a view of the harbour somewhat different from -the one previously shown. The houses looking down upon it belong to that part of the town known as the Citta Vittoriosa, and are in some cases of great antiquity. At one time they were the residences of the old Maltese nobility and gentry, but they have now passed into the occupation of the sailors, boatmen, and others whose business is carried on in such places. The Grand Harbour is of comparatively modern construction, though it is actually built upon the lines of an ancient one that existed here as long back as the time when St. Paul visited the island.、クレジット:John Short/Universal Images Group/共同通信イメージズ

Date: ca. 1894.From early in his career Gauguin was attracted to the relatively remote and unspoiled terrain of Brittany in northwestern France. Breton culture, infused with vestiges of its pagan Celtic past, appealed to his taste for the primitive and the exotic. The artist is thought to have made this work during his fifth and final visit to the region in 1894, between voyages to the tropics. The brushwork recalls Gauguin‘s earlier Impressionist pictures, while the palette evokes his Tahitian paintings. Interior courtyard

Interior courtyard, facade of the Doge‘s Palace in Venice, Italy.

Man in Oriental Costume (“The Noble Slav“).

Man in Oriental Costume (“The Noble Slav“). Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 60 1/8 x 43 3/4in. (152.7 x 111.1cm). Date: 1632.Compared with Rembrandt‘s formal portraits of the same year, this picture is remarkable for its brilliant brushwork and dramatic illumination. It was probably painted shortly after he moved from his native Leiden to Amsterdam, and in its exotic subject and style was surely intended for a knowledgeable collector. Pictures of imaginary Persian, Ottoman, or otherwise “Oriental“ princes were popular at the time because of new trade contacts between the Dutch and the Middle East. However, the model is a Dutchman who appears in other paintings by Rembrandt and by artists in his circle. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Diesel engine: internal combustion engine invented by Rudolph Diesel in 1897.

Diesel engine: internal combustion engine invented by Rudolph Diesel in 1897. In 1892, Diesel (1858-1913) patented a design for a new type of internal combustion engine. Research into his invention was subsidised by the German armaments manufacturers Krupps. In 1897 Diesel produced a 25 horsepower, four-stroke, single vertical cylinder compression engine, the high efficiency of which, together with its comparative simplicity of design, made it an immediate commercial success. Subsequent royalty fees brought great wealth to its inventor. From ‘Grande Encyclopedie Practique de Mecanique et d‘Electricite‘ by H Desarces. Interior courtyard

Interior courtyard, facade of the Doge‘s Palace in Venice, Italy.

    Kedleston Hall in Kedleston

Kedleston Hall in Kedleston, Derbyshire, is approximately four miles north-west of Derby, and is the seat of the Curzon family since at least 1297. The house was designed by the Palladian architects James Paine and Matthew Brettingham At the time a relatively unknown architect, Robert Adam was designing some garden temples to enhance the landscape of the park; Curzon was so impressed with Adam‘s designs, that Adam was quickly put in charge of the construction of the new mansion. this statue in the Corps de logis sits within the six-columned Corinthian portico, then the south front (illustrated right) is pure Robert Adam.、クレジット:World History Archive/ニューズコム/共同通信イメージズ

    Young Lady in 1866.

Young Lady in 1866. Artist: Édouard Manet (French, Paris 1832-1883 Paris). Dimensions: 72 7/8 x 50 5/8 in. (185.1 x 128.6 cm). Date: 1866.Manet‘s model, Victorine Meurent, had recently posed as the brazen nudes in Olympia and Luncheon on the Grass (both Musée d‘Orsay, Paris). Here, appearing relatively demure, she flaunts an intimate silk dressing gown. Critics eyed the painting as a rejoinder to Courbet‘s Woman with a Parrot (29.100.57) and as indicative of Manet‘s “current vice“ of failing to “value a head more than a slipper.“ Recent scholars have interpreted it as an allegory of the five senses: the nosegay (smell), the orange (taste), the parrot-confidant (hearing), and the man‘s monocle she fingers (sight and touch). King David with Angels.

King David with Angels. Artist: Morazzone (Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli) (Italian, Morazzone 1573-1626 Piacenza). Dimensions: 10 7/16 x 8 11/16 in. (26.5 x 22.1 cm). Date: ca. 1625-26.The monumental seated figure of David who points downward as he receives inspiration from an angel at upper left dominates this scene; in the right background the youthful figure of an angel can be discerned playing the harp. This relatively finished, squared demonstration drawing (‘modello‘) was preparatory for a fresco on one of the spandrels supporting the dome of Piacenza Cathedral, painted by Morazzone in 1625-26, shortly before his death. The frescoes were left unfinished by Morazzone and the remaining compartments were finished by Guercino. Among the only differences between study and finished work, the drawing omits the monumental flying figure of the angel bearing a scroll、クレジット:Album/Metropolitan Museum of Art,NY/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。
