architectural feature from the Doge‘s Palace in Venice

(Detail) architectural feature from the Doge‘s Palace in Venice, Italy. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the Republic of Venice. Its two most visible facdes look towards the Venetian Lagoon and St. Mark‘s Square, or rather the Piazzetta. The use of arcading in the lower stories produces an interesting ‘gravity-defying‘ effect. There is also effective use of colour contrasts. largely constructed from 1309 to 1424, designed perhaps by Filippo Calendario. It replaced earlier fortified buildings of which relatively little is known. Giovanni and Bartolomeo Bon created the Porta della Carta in 1442, a monumental late-gothic gate on the Piazzetta side of the palace. This gate leads to a central courtyard. The palace was badly damaged by a fire on December 20, 1577.、クレジット:World History Archive/ニューズコム/共同通信イメージズ

A Sermon in a Village Church.

A Sermon in a Village Church. Artist: Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, Siegen 1577-1640 Antwerp). Dimensions: 16 5/8 x 22 9/16 in. (42.2 x 57.3 cm). Date: ca. 1630.This sheet, a relatively recent addition to Rubens‘s drawn oeuvre, is exceptional in several ways. Even if it seems to have been slightly cropped (especially at the left and the top), it remains one of the artist‘s largest works on paper. Its technique is much richer than that of most of his other drawings, combining chalk and paints, and gives the work the appearance of an oil sketch. The subject matter may be considered unique for Rubens. In a simple village church, a Catholic priest can be seen preaching to farmers and peasants--men on the left and women on the right--who listen with varying degrees of attentiveness.、クレジット:Album/Metropolitan Museum of Art,NY/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

Date: 1624.Although recently published as a work by Werner van den Valckert (born about 1585, died 1627/28), this panel is almost certainly a comparatively early work by another Amsterdam portraitist, Nicolaes Eliasz. At the death of the conservative Cornelis van der Voort (born about 1576, died 1624), Eliasz. and the young Thomas de Keyser (see A Musician and His Daughter of 1629, 64.65.4) became the leading portraitists in Amsterdam until Rembrandt arrived in the winter of 1631-32. Date: ca. 1894.From early in his career Gauguin was attracted to the relatively remote and unspoiled terrain of Brittany in northwestern France. Breton culture, infused with vestiges of its pagan Celtic past, appealed to his taste for the primitive and the exotic. The artist is thought to have made this work during his fifth and final visit to the region in 1894, between voyages to the tropics. The brushwork recalls Gauguin‘s earlier Impressionist pictures, while the palette evokes his Tahitian paintings. It was probably painted shortly after he moved from his native Leiden to Amsterdam, and in its exotic subject and style was surely intended for a knowledgeable collector.、クレジット:Sepia Times/Universal Images Group/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用に関してはお問合せください。

He made several drawings that are variations of this subject and larger that the present panel (one sheet is in the Petit Palais, Paris). He often showed light entering a relatively dark space through an arched opening. Interior courtyard

Interior courtyard, facade of the Doge‘s Palace in Venice, Italy.

Man in Oriental Costume (“The Noble Slav“). Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 60 1/8 x 43 3/4in. (152.7 x 111.1cm). Date: 1632.Compared with Rembrandt‘s formal portraits of the same year, this picture is remarkable for its brilliant brushwork and dramatic illumination. It was probably painted shortly after he moved from his native Leiden to Amsterdam, and in its exotic subject and style was surely intended for a knowledgeable collector. Pictures of imaginary Persian, Ottoman, or otherwise “Oriental“ princes were popular at the time because of new trade contacts between the Dutch and the Middle East. However, the model is a Dutchman who appears in other paintings by Rembrandt and by artists in his circle. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Diesel engine: internal combustion engine invented by Rudolph Diesel in 1897.

Diesel engine: internal combustion engine invented by Rudolph Diesel in 1897. In 1892, Diesel (1858-1913) patented a design for a new type of internal combustion engine. Research into his invention was subsidised by the German armaments manufacturers Krupps. In 1897 Diesel produced a 25 horsepower, four-stroke, single vertical cylinder compression engine, the high efficiency of which, together with its comparative simplicity of design, made it an immediate commercial success. Subsequent royalty fees brought great wealth to its inventor. From ‘Grande Encyclopedie Practique de Mecanique et d‘Electricite‘ by H Desarces. The domestic pig‘s head-plus-body-length ranges from 0.9 to 1.8 m (35 to 71 in), and adult pigs typically weigh between 50 and 350 kg (110 and 770 lb), with well-fed individuals often exceeding this weight range. The size and weight of a hog largely depends on its breed. Compared to other artiodactyls, its head is relatively long, pointed, and free of warts. Even-toed ungulates are generally herbivorous, but the domestic pig is an omnivore, like its wild relative., reproductive organs.、クレジット:Album/quintlox/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

Sterna cantiaca, Print, Sterna is a genus of terns in the bird family Laridae. Sterna is derived from Old English “stearn“ which appears in the poem The Seafarer; a similar word was used to refer to terns by the Frisians. It used to encompass most “white“ terns indiscriminately, but mtDNA sequence comparisons have recently determined that this arrangement is paraphyletic. It is now restricted to the typical medium-sized white terns occurring near-globally in coastal regions., 1700-1880.、クレジット:Album/quintlox/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。
