三峡ダムの水位が１７５メートルまで上昇するのに伴って史跡の白鶴梁題刻が長江の底に水没してしまうのを防ぐため、中国は２００３年から白鶴梁題刻保護事業をスタートさせた。そして２００９年、水深４０メートルの水中に白鶴梁水下博物館が建設された。この「世界初の潜水せずに行ける水中遺跡博物館」は今年開館１０周年を迎えた。白鶴梁題刻は本来、重慶市涪陵区を流れる長江の中ほどにそびえ立つ、全長が約１・６キロ、幅は平均で約１５メートルの天然の石梁だった。伝説によると、北魏時代（３８６～５３４年）この付近の長江の岸辺には一面の林が広がり、石の上に白い鶴が無数に群がっていたことから、「白鶴梁」の名がついたという。石梁には西暦７６３年～１９６３年の間に刻まれた１６５段にわたる文字が残る。それらは長江の涪陵区間を流れる１２００年余りに及ぶ渇水水文の記録であり、その極めて高い水文科学的価値から、この石梁は「世界最古の水文観測所」と称えられている。石梁の表面には清代康熙年間に刻まれた一対の魚の彫刻もある。この魚の目が並ぶラインがちょうど長江涪陵区間の水位標の零点高（水位を測る基準面の標高）に当たることから、「長江標準眼」とも呼ばれる。また、ここの石梁には歴代の文人墨客が刻んだ３万字に上る碑文が残されていることから「水中の碑林」の異名も持つ。これらの際立った歴史的、科学的、芸術的価値に鑑み、１９８８年に白鶴梁題刻は中国の重点文物保護単位に指定された。白鶴梁題刻保護事業は、これまで世界で行われた河川の水中文化財保護事業の中でも、関連する工学技術分野が最も多岐にわたり、最も難易度の高いプロジェクトだった。１０年にわたる事前検証と７年間の建設工事を経て、２００９年に元々ある場所に「世界初の潜水せずに行ける水中遺跡博物館」が完成し、水中文化遺跡を本来の場所で科学的に保護する試みが成功した。現在、人々は長さ９０メートルのエスカレーターに乗ってこの全長６８メートル、外径約３・８メートルの見学通路へ下降し、２３ある鑑賞用の窓から、保護カバーに覆われて水中で静かに横たわる白鶴梁をはっきりと見ることができる。（記者／黎華玲、楊仕彦）＜映像内容＞潜水せずに行ける水中遺跡博物館の様子、撮影日：撮影日不明、クレジット：新華社／共同通信イメージズ
