アルベルト・アインシュタインと妻のエルザ・アインシュタイン Albert Einstein with second wife, in early 1930s

Portrait of Albert Einstein with his second wife, Elsa, taken by Sam Little in the early 1930s. Einstein was born at Ulm, Germany, on 14 March 1879. Encouraged by his father, who was an electrical engineer, Einstein studied at the Zurich Polytechnic Institute until the age of 21, then worked at the Swiss Patent Office. Although famous for his papers on special and general relativity, he won the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics for his work on the photoelectric effect. Einstein died on 18 April 1955 without completing his Grand Unified Theory of the fundamental forces.、クレジット:Science Photo Library/共同通信イメージズ

マックス・プランクとアルベルト・アインシュタイン Max Planck and Albert Einstein

Max Planck and Albert Einstein. Planck (left, 1858-1947) was a German physicist whose work led to the development of quantum theory. Einstein (1879-1955), a German- Swiss physicist, put forward relativity theory. In 1900, Planck proposed that radiation is emitted in discrete packets (quanta). This marked the start of modern physics. He received the Nobel Prize for physics in 1918. Einstein won this prize in 1921 for his 1905 paper on the photoelectric effect, the liberation of electrons from matter due to electromagnetic radiation. He also proposed the theories of special and general relativity, which changed our ideas about space and time.、クレジット:Science Photo Library/共同通信イメージズ

    アルベルト・アインシュタイン Albert Einstein, physicist

Albert Einstein (1879-1955), a physicist, received US citizenship from Judge Philip Forman. Einstein was born in Germany but renounced his citizenship in 1896, becoming a Swiss citizen in 1899 and, in 1940, after emigrating there in 1933, a US citizen. His mass-energy equation resulted from his 1905 paper on Special Relativity. This paper, with his 1915 General Theory of Relativity, replaced the Newtonian world view, rewriting our concepts of gravity, space, and time. Early work on the photoelectric effect won him the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics. Much of his later life was spent in opposition to the theory of quantum mechanics.、クレジット:Science Photo Library/共同通信イメージズ
