Huge Collection Of 54 Million Year Old Bird Fossils Heralds Discovery Of New Species

August 7, 2022, Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom: Picture Shows: Detail of Geological Conservator Vicen Carrio working on a specimen from the Eocene birds collection at National Museums Scotland...A collection of over 700 bird fossils which are 54-56 million years old have been bequeathed to National Museums Scotland. The fossils represent the early stages in the evolution of modern birds and are believed to contain many species which are new to science. .The specimens were collected over decades by amateur palaeontology enthusiast Michael Daniels. Daniels, who died last year aged 90, assembled his remarkable collection of several hundred skeletons and part skeletons discovered in nodules of the London Clay, which had eroded out of the cliffs at Walton-on-the-Naze in Essex. Danielsââ¬â¢ daughter lived in Edinburgh, and it was on a family visit to the National Museum of Scotland over 25 years ago that he shared news of his collection with the museumââ¬â¢s Principal Curator of Vertebrates, Dr Andrew Kit...

The Oldest Short-Tailed Bird Fossil Discovered - China

Chen Runsheng, a professor-level senior engineer of Fujian Institute of Geological Survey (FIGS), checks a sample under microscope at a laboratory of FIGS, in Fuzhou, southeast China‘s Fujian Province, on February 11, 2025. Chinese scientists have unearthed the oldest short-tailed bird fossil, dating back about 150 million years, in east China‘s Fujian Province. This suggests that birds might have originated earlier than previously thought. The fossilized bird Baminornis zhenghensis was discovered in Zhenghe County, Fujian Province. Its short tail ends in a compound bone called the pygostyle, a feature uniquely present in modern birds. This indicates that the body structure of modern birds emerged in the Late Jurassic Period, 20 million years earlier than previously known...、クレジット:Xinhua/ABACA/共同通信イメージズ
