The Rehearsal of the Ballet Onstage.

The Rehearsal of the Ballet Onstage. Artist: Edgar Degas (French, Paris 1834-1917 Paris). Dimensions: 21 3/8 x 28 3/4 in. (54.3 x 73 cm). Date: ca. 1874.There are three similar versions of this scene, and their precise relationship has bedeviled scholars for decades. The largest, painted in grisaille (Musée d‘Orsay, Paris), appeared in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874. The two others, tentatively dated the same year, are in the Metropolitan‘s collection. This painting probably preceded the version in pastel (29.100.39), which is more freely handled. The importance that Degas attached to the composition is evident in the preparatory drawings that he made for almost every figure, from the dancer scratching her back in the foreground to the woman yawning next to the stage flat. A Cowherd at Valhermeil, Auvers-sur-Oise.

A Cowherd at Valhermeil, Auvers-sur-Oise. Artist: Camille Pissarro (French, Charlotte Amalie, Saint Thomas 1830-1903 Paris). Dimensions: 21 5/8 x 36 1/4 in. (54.9 x 92.1 cm). Date: 1874.This view shows one of the roads connecting the hamlet of Valhermeil in Auvers with Pontoise, the village northwest of Paris where Pissarro lived for many years. Between 1873 and 1882, he painted some twenty works in this area, several featuring the same red-roofed house. The subject, villagers walking on paths through the French countryside, was one of the artist‘s favorites, reflecting his interest in the pulse of daily rural life. Made in 1874, the year of the first Impressionist exhibition, this picture demonstrates Pissarro‘s adaptation of the looser touch, broken brushstrokes, and lighter palette of younger colleagues like Monet. The Public Garden at Pontoise.

キーワード:ピエール=オーギュスト・ルノワール、The Public Garden at Pontoise. Artist: Camille Pissarro (French, Charlotte Amalie, Saint Thomas 1830-1903 Paris). Dimensions: 23 5/8 x 28 3/4 in. (60 x 73 cm). Date: 1874.Pissarro‘s paintings of the mid-1870s are largely devoted to the fields and roads near his home in Pontoise. Here, he turned to a more urban subject, of the type favored by colleagues such as Monet and Renoir: the town‘s public garden. The view across the Montmorency plain toward Paris may be glimpsed at left, beyond the spire of Pontoise‘s Notre-Dame church. But rather than emphasizing the vista, Pissarro focused on the park‘s terraces, populated by well-dressed bourgeois and their children. He exhibited a similar scene, painted the year previously (State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg), at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874.
