‘Sea snot‘ on Turkey‘s shores alarms environmentalists

A thick, brown, bubbly foam dubbed “sea snot“ has covered the shores of the Sea of Marmara, alarming Istanbul residents and raising new environmental concerns. The naturally-occurring mucilage was first documented in Turkey in 2007, when it was also seen in parts of the Aegean Sea near Greece. But this outbreak is the largest on record, blamed by experts on a combination of pollution and global warming, which speeds up the growth of algae responsible for the slimy sludge. June 4, 2021, Istanbul, pendik, Turkey: Sea saliva (mucilage) covers surface of the Marmara Sea, coast of Istanbul..Mucilage, which was observed intensively on the water in the Sea of Marmara since 2007, is due to the excessive increase in the sea of single-celled plant microorganisms called ‘‘phytoplankton‘‘. In the Marmara Sea these single-celled microorganisms also multiply by taking advantage of the marine pollution caused by domestic and factory wastes and the changing water temperature level due to global climate change.
