2020年04月23日Kepler-1649c: Earth-Size, Habitable Zone Planet Hides in Plain Sight NASA SPACE KEPLERA team of transatlantic scientists, using reanalyzed data from NASA‘s Kepler space telescope, has discovered an Earth-size exoplanet orbiting in its star‘s habitable zone, the area around a star where a rocky planet could support liquid water. This artist‘s illustration shows what Kepler-1649c could look like from its surface. Scientists discovered this planet, called Kepler-1649c when looking through old observations from Kepler, which the agency retired in 2018. While previous searches with a computer algorithm misidentified it, researchers reviewing Kepler data took a second look at the signature and recognized it as a planet. Out of all the exoplanets found by Kepler, this distant world located 300 light-years from Earth is most similar to Earth in size and estimated temperature. The JWST will provide improved infrared resolution and sensitivity over Hubble, and will enable a broad range of investigations across the fields of astronomy and cosmology, including observing some of the most distant events and objects in the universe, such as the formation of the first galaxies, and atmospheric characterization of potentially habitable exoplanets. NASA announced that the launch date had been delayed to 31 October 2021. Problems with the Ariane 5 launch vehicle have now pushed the launch date to December 18, 2021. 2021年03月29日Nearest Exoplanet To Our Solar SystemMarch 29, 2021 - California, USA - This artist‘s concept is of a Jupiter-mass planet orbiting the nearby star Epsilon Eridani. Located 10.5 light-years away, it was the closest known exoplanet to our solar system when it was discovered in 2007. The planet is in an elliptical orbit that carries it as close to the star as Earth is from the Sun, and as far from the star as Jupiter is from the Sun. Epsilon Eridandi is a young star, only 800 million years old. It is still surrounded by a disk of dust that extends 20 billion miles from the star. The disk appears as a linear sheet of reflecting dust in this view because it is seen edge-on from the planet‘s orbit, which is in the same plane as the dust disk. 2021年05月04日Discovering Circumbinary Star SystemsMay 4, 2021 - USA - May the Fourth Be With You!. When the first Star Wars movie was released in 1977, it featured the now-iconic two-sun, ‘circumbinary‘ planet Tatooine. At that time astronomers didn‘t really know if such solar systems existed. Indeed, the first extra-solar planet wasn‘t detected until the early 1990s. And, the first actual circumbinary planet was detected in 2005, and it was a Jupiter-size planet orbiting a system composed of a sun-like star and a brown dwarf. Fast forward a few decades and researchers working with data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) discovered the mission‘s first circumbinary planet, a world orbiting two stars, as shown in this image from January 2020. The planet, called TOI 1338 b, is around 6.9 times larger than Earth, or between the sizes of Neptune and Saturn. It lies in a system 1,300 light-years away in the constellation Pictor. 2022年07月12日NASAÕs Webb Delivers Deepest Images of Universe YetJuly 12, 2022: NASA‘s James Webb Space Telescope has captured the distinct signature of water, along with evidence for clouds and haze, in the atmosphere surrounding a hot, puffy gas giant planet orbiting a distant Sun-like star. The observation, which reveals the presence of specific gas molecules based on tiny decreases in the brightness of precise colors of light, is the most detailed of its kind to date, demonstrating Webb‘s unprecedented ability to analyze atmospheres hundreds of light-years away. While the Hubble Space Telescope has analyzed numerous exoplanet atmospheres over the past two decades, capturing the first clear detection of water in 2013, Webb‘s immediate and more detailed observation marks a giant leap forward in the quest to characterize potentially habitable planets beyond Earth.
