Finely wrought goldsmith work--such as was actually produced for the opulent taste of the cosmopolitan community in Antwerp--abounds. The caricature-like features of the Magi and their retinue reveal the artist‘s interest in the extreme physiognomic types popularized by Leonardo da Vinci and made available through prints. It was this interest in the psychology of physiognomy that made Metsys such a gifted portraitist. Frieseke‘s composition and vibrant palette suggest that his model and her clothed companion have found relief from the summer‘s heat in a shady area beside the water. The free rendering of the grass and foliage contrasts with the more academic treatment of the figure, whose solid form and clear contours recall alfresco images of nudes painted by the French Impressionist Auguste Renoir, whom Frieseke greatly admired. The leaves are filled with more knot work in white on the dark ground while swirling straps in black surround them. Degas also emphasized anti-natural chartreuses and greens in modeling the figure‘s pink flesh, perhaps inspired by the play of complementary color contrasts in the work of such younger contemporaries as Seurat or Van Gogh. The two others, tentatively dated the same year, are in the Metropolitan‘s collection. This painting probably preceded the version in pastel (29.100.39), which is more freely handled. The importance that Degas attached to the composition is evident in the preparatory drawings that he made for almost every figure, from the dancer scratching her back in the foreground to the woman yawning next to the stage flat.
