    Allegory on the Fidelity of the Lizard (recto); Design for a Stage Setting (verso). Artist: Leonardo da Vinci (Italian, Vinci 1452-1519 Amboise). Dimensions: 7 15/16 x 5 1/4in. (20.2 x 13.3cm). Date: 1496.The exquisite small sketch of a tondo on the recto of the Metropolitan sheet was undoubtedly intended for a medal on a theatrical costume, therefore perhaps related in theme to the verso sketches for the staging of Baldassare Taccone‘s La Danae or another festa. In its type of design and drawing style, the recto drawing on the Metropolitan sheet is closely comparable to two other sheets with small allegorical scenes inscribed within a tondo shape, one in Cambridge (Fitzwilliam Museum inv. Much like the picturesque paintings of Renoir that depict such confectionary creations, both day and evening gowns were highly ornamented and often executed in delicate, feminine textiles. Date: 1890s.Cézanne treated the rocks in this composition much as he did the fruits in his still lifes, rendering the shapes with passages of subtly varied color. Green, blue, and purple tints, with an accent of golden sunlight at center, impart a shimmering vibrancy to the stones. The sense of delicacy is enhanced by the thin, watercolor-like application of pigment, typical of Cézanne‘s oils in the mid-1890s. Scholars traditionally identified the setting as the forest of Fontainebleau, where the artist worked around 1894, but it has also been suggested that the site is near Aix-en-Provence. This plate is based on his copy after a fresco by Ludovico Carracci (Italian, 1555-1619) in the cathedral in Piacenza, <i>Triumphant Angels with Symbols of the Virgin Mary</i>.
