The church was built between 1730 and 1735 according to the plans of the architect Philipp Gerlach and was considered a major work of the Prussian Baroque. After the bombing by the Allies on 14 April 1945, only ruins remained, which were blown up and removed only in 1968. In June 2002, the medieval old town centre of Stralsund was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites together with the Hanseatic City of Wismar.
