    Heart

Heart. Historical anatomical artwork of the human heart, seen from the front. Coronary blood vessels are seen on the surface of the heart, supplying this muscular organ with oxygen so it can pump blood around the body. Blood vessels with deoxygenated blood are blue, while those with oxygenated blood are red. The blood vessels across top are (from left): the vena cava (blue), the aortic arch (red), and the pulmonary artery (blue). The pulmonary vein (not clearly seen) is to the right and behind the pulmonary artery. Veins bring blood to the heart. Arteries carry blood away from the heart. The pulmonary blood vessels carry blood between the heart and lungs. Artwork from Atlas of Anatomy, by Bourgery and Jacob, published in France in 8 volumes from 1831 to 1854.、クレジット:SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/共同通信イメージズ

Blood vessels of the thorax and abdomen

Blood vessels of the thorax and abdomen. Artwork taken from a textbook by Joseph Maclise (ca. 1815- 1880), a British surgeon. Most of the organs of this male cadaver have been removed to reveal the aorta (centre), with the carotid and brachial arteries arising from the aortic arch. Below are the kidneys (brown) with adrenal glands (beige) above. The renal arteries supplying the kidneys can also be seen, along with the smaller arteries supplying the intestines. The sigmoid colon, part of the large intestine (white), is visible at lower right, and the bladder (white, rounded) at lower centre. The tenth rib and xiphoid bone (the protuberance at the base of the ribcage) have been left intact.、クレジット:SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/共同通信イメージズ

Heart valves and strings, SEM

Heart valves and strings, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This dissection shows both the mitral valve (centre) and the aortic valve (upper centre). The mitral valve lies between the left ventricle of the heart (bottom) and the left atrium (not seen). The aortic valve (upper centre) is where the blood passes from the left ventricle into the aorta (top right). Also seen here are the heart strings (chordae tendineae, thread-like), the papilliary muscles (thick bands at lower right and left), and the trabeculae carneae (columnar structures on the inner wall of the ventricle).、クレジット:SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/共同通信イメージズ
