Paul Cézanne: Trees and Road (Arbres et route), Paul Cézanne, c.

Paul Cézanne: Trees and Road (Arbres et route), Paul Cézanne, c. 1890, Oil on canvas, Rather than depicting a recognizable site or a spectacular view, as had been the tradition in French landscape painting, Cézanne focuses on an ordinary tree next to a road. Trees appear frequently in his work, sometimes as framing devices for a view into the distance, but more often as the main subject. Here, scraggly branches reach across the canvas as distant foliage is abstracted into a screen of broad, flat marks. Cézanne probably painted this scene on or near his family‘s property outside of Aix-en-Provence., Overall: 28 3/4 x 23 5/8 in. China: Zhuge Liang (CE 181-234) was Chancellor of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history (CE 220–280).

Zhuge Liang (CE 181-234) was Chancellor of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history. He is often recognised as the greatest and most accomplished strategist of his era. Often depicted wearing a robe and holding a fan made of crane feathers, Zhuge was not only an important military strategist and statesman; he was also an accomplished scholar and inventor. His reputation as an intelligent and learned scholar grew even while he was living in relative seclusion, earning him the nickname Wolong (literally Crouching Dragon). Zhuge is an uncommon two-character compound family name. His name ? even his surname alone ? has become synonymous with intelligence and tactics in Chinese culture. Amedeo Modigliani: Reclining Nude from the Back (Nu couché de dos), Amedeo Modigliani, 1917, Oil on canvas, This painting is part of a series of reclining nude figures that Modigliani began in 1917. Characterized by a frank, self-conscious sexuality, these nudes shocked contemporary audiences; one such work was removed by police from an exhibition in Paris for perceived impropriety. Also shocking was Modigliani‘s mixing together of several traditions across a single figure: while the masklike treatment of the face draws on the vocabularies of African sculpture, the languorous, sensual body recalls the nudes of European painters like Titian and Boucher. All on hobbies

All on hobbies, gee up, gee ho!‘ The major figures in American national politics in 1838 are gently satirized, each characterized as riding a favourite issue or ‘hobbyhorse.‘ At the lead (far left) is President Martin Van Buren, riding a horse ‘Sub-Treasury,‘ which he calls his ‘Old Hickory nag.‘ The artist refers to Van Buren‘s independent treasury program, a system whereby federal funds were to be administered by revenue-collecting agencies or local ‘sub-treasuries‘ rather than by a national bank. The Independent Treasury Bill was perceived as an outgrowth of predecessor Jackson‘s anti-Bank program. Another hobbyhorse, ‘United States Bank‘ (center), is shared by Whig senators Henry Clay and Daniel Webster, leaders of congressional opposition to Jackson and Van Buren‘s respective fiscal agendas.、クレジット:World History Archive/ニューズコム/共同通信イメージズ※エディトリアル使用のみ。広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用に関してはお問合せください。

Dedication of the monument on the battlefield of Bull Run, Virginia, 15 July, 1865.

Dedication of the monument on the battlefield of Bull Run, Virginia, 15 July, 1865. Two battles, that of July 21, 1861, and that of August 29, 1862, were fought between the Confederates and Federals in the plain traversed by the small river called Bull Run, which crosses the main road from Washington to Richmond, a few miles north of Manassas Gap. The scene of the first conflict, one of the earliest of the war in Virginia, would now scarcely be recognised as a battlefield. Four years have obliterated nearly all the marks of the struggle, and the relic-hunter only now and then finds in the grass a memento of the event. Very few shot and shell remain upon the surface; the trees are hiding the blotches on their trunks made by bullets, and the only bones that are found, with few exceptions, are those of horses, which visitors have not thought of sufficient importance to be carried away. 、クレジット:Album/quintlox/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。

A postcard of Queenstown, New Zealand by famous photographer Frederick George Radcliffe (F.G.R Postcards) The notable British born photographer, Frederick George Radcliffe is widely recognised in New Zealand as one of the pre-eminent photographers of his time. Radcliffe traveled the length and breadth of this country recording clear, detailed pictorial images of rural and urban New Zealand scenes. Much of his subject matter consisted of aesthetically pleasing views of parks and gardens, municipal buildings, churches and all manor of community infrastructure. Curiously, with the exception of an array of maori subjects a great many of his images were completely devoid of the presence of people.、クレジット:John Short/Universal Images Group/共同通信イメージズ

Octopus niveus, Print, The octopus is a soft-bodied, eight-limbed mollusc of the order Octopoda.

Octopus niveus, Print, The octopus is a soft-bodied, eight-limbed mollusc of the order Octopoda. Around 300 species are recognised, and the order is grouped within the class Cephalopoda with squids, cuttlefish, and nautiloids. Like other cephalopods, the octopus is bilaterally symmetric with two eyes and a beak, with its mouth at the center point of the eight limbs (“tentacle“ is used as an umbrella term for cephalopod limbs; however, within a teuthological context; “arm“ is used to refer to such limbs while “tentacle“ is reserved for feeding appendages not found on octopuses). The soft body can rapidly alter its shape, enabling octopuses to squeeze through small gaps. They trail their eight appendages behind them as they swim. The siphon is used both for respiration and for locomotion, by expelling a jet of water. Octopuses have a complex nervous system and excellent sight, and are amon、クレジット:Album/quintlox/共同通信イメージズ ※エディトリアル使用のみ。表紙、広告、プロモーション、商業目的での利用はお問合せください。クレジットは必ず表記してください。
