Brazil: Fear of dam burst in Minas Gerais

02 June 2019, Brazil, Barao de Cocais: View to the Gongo Soco Mine near the village Barao de Cocais. About four months after the devastating dam burst at an iron ore mine in southeast Brazil, the inhabitants of Barao de Cocais fear a possible dam burst. “The embankment will break,“ assured the National Mining Board at the end of May. The mining company Vale had also stated that an independent auditor had found that the stability of the Sul Superior dam at the Gongo Soco mine was critical. Evacuation exercises were then carried out. Two months later, the group pointed out that “no technical elements“ would speak of a possible breach of the Sul Superior dam. Nevertheless, the region is on a higher alert level in case of a break, the company said. The fears in nearby villages are being expressed against the backdrop of the disaster of 25 January. 、クレジット:DPA/共同通信イメージズ

Ukraine: The slow death of the Ukrainian metal industry

June 15, 2022, Kryvyi Rhi, Ukraine: However, not all mining companies are equally affected. To survive the rail rush, some firms have deeper pockets than others. ‘‘Our ore is of higher quality, so we have been able to pass on the higher transport costs to our foreign customers, most of whom are in Europe. Our production has hardly changed since the war started,‘‘ explains Vladimir Rochenko, the director of the Veselyi Kut quarry, one of the country‘s largest iron ore extraction sites.. .In Ukraine‘s main industrial stronghold, metal factories are idling and laying off workers by the thousands, while martial law has suspended a considerable part of Ukrainian labour law. For the workers in the sector, a violent economic crisis is adding to the war.
