GDR - winter in brown coal mining

Snowbound worker in the Meuro mine near Senftenberg in the former district of Cottbus (Brandenburg) on New Year‘s Day 31.12.1978. The time around the turn of the year 1978/1979 went down in the history of the GDR as “disaster winter“. Within a few hours, temperatures dropped from mild five to minus 20 degrees, with heavy snowfall disrupting traffic and large parts of the economy. The frost stopped the conveyor belts in the open pit and allowed the coal to freeze in the wagons. - NO BILDFUNK UTILIZATION - Photo: Erich Schutt / dpa-Zentralbild / ZB | usage worldwide、クレジット:DPA/共同通信イメージズ

  • Snow chaos in the GDR 1978/1979
    1979年01月04日
Snow chaos in the GDR 1978/1979

on 09.10.1979, the miners in the Espenhain opencast mine in the district of Leipzig are working with converted jet engines to free the shafts of the coal railways from snow and ice. The unusually heavy snowfall in the verganversus week has led to great difficulties in the lignite opencast mining areas of the GDR. The drop in temperature on 29.12.1978 led to snow chaos in northern Germany, the north of the GDR, Denmark and southern Sweden. Partly the traffic and the power supply collapsed, localities were cut off from the outside world. In the Federal Republic alone, 17 people were killed because of the snow chaos. On February 14, 1979 dense snowfall and a gale-force storm in northern Germany led to another snow chaos. Photo: ADN +++ (c) dpa - Report +++ | usage worldwide、クレジット:DPA/共同通信イメージズ

Digging deep in S.Africa as diamond hunt gets tougher

Proof that diamonds are getting harder to find can be found in the South African bush, where one of the world‘s largest mining companies is spending $2 billion tunnelling beneath an open-pit mine. De Beers spent 20 years digging a 450-metres (1,500 feet) deep hole to access diamond-rich rock from the surface at the Venetia mine, close to the border with Zimbabwe and Botswana. Helicopter against coal dust

A helicopter flies over the Vereinigtes Schleenhain open-cast mine of the Central German Brown Coal Company (MIBRAG) in Deutzen, Germany, 02 August 2017. The helicopter sprayed the mine for three days with a special mixture of cellulose and wood fiber mulch. The mixture hardens the surface of the mine and thus reduces pollution of the neighbouring communities with coal dust. Ten hectares were sprayed in total. 20,000 liters of the solution are required per hectare. The mine supplies with coal mainly the Lippendorf Power Plant. About 4500 years old graves in the limestone open pit

17 September 2017, Saxony-Anhalt, Förderstedt: Archaeologists are investigating the area that is planned for the expansion of the open-cast limestone mine. The archaeologists uncovered graves, burial mounds and settlement pits from the Stone and Bronze Ages. Some of the seven Stone Age graves, which are around 4500 years old, had stone fixtures and grave goods such as richly decorated vessels, flint blades and pierced dog teeth. The archaeologists also uncovered a row of pits, which probably served to structure the landscape. (Aerial view with drone) Photo: Jan Woitas/dpa-Zentralbild/dpa、クレジット:DPA/共同通信イメージズ
