Paterson police officials sue NJ attorney general for taking over department - 09 Oct 2023

The City of Patersonâs ousted police chief Engelbert Ribeiro is asking the courts to terminate the New Jersey attorney generalâs control of the Paterson Police Department and to put him back in charge. The lawsuit claims that state officials violated the New Jersey Constitution and its âhome ruleâ laws when they took over the city Police Department. âTodayâs lawsuit is as unfortunate as it is meritless,â said a statement issued by the Attorney General‘s Office. âThe attorney generalâs authority to supersede local law enforcement agencies is well established and given the history in Paterson, the need to do so was clear.
