    October 19, 2022, Space: NASA‘s Hubble Space Telescope made the Pillars of Creation famous with its first image in 1995, but revisited the scene in 2014 to reveal a sharper, wider view in visible light, shown above at left. The Pillars of Creation are set off in a kaleidoscope of color in NASA‘s James Webb Space Telescope‘s near-infrared-light view. The pillars look like arches and spires rising out of a desert landscape, but are filled with semi-transparent gas and dust, and ever changing. This is a region where young stars are forming, or have barely burst from their dusty cocoons as they continue to form. These are the bright red orbs that sometimes appear with eight diffraction spikes. When knots with sufficient mass form within the pillar.     July 12, 2022: This landscape of “mountains“ and “valleys“ speckled with glittering stars is actually the edge of a nearby, young, star-forming region called NGC 3324 in the Carina Nebula. Captured in infrared light by NASA‘s new James Webb Space Telescope, this image reveals for the first time previously invisible areas of star birth. Called the Cosmic Cliffs, Webb‘s seemingly three-dimensional picture looks like craggy mountains on a moonlit evening. In reality, it is the edge of the giant, gaseous cavity within NGC 3324, and the tallest “peaks“ in this image are about 7 light-years high. The cavernous area has been carved from the nebula by the intense ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds from extremely massive, hot, young stars located in the center of the bubble, above the area shown in this image. Webb reveals emerging stellar nurseries and individual stars that are completely hidden in visible-light pictures.
