    Crab Farming - China

A drone photo shows farmers feeding crabs in a crab pond in Xuegong Village, Linyi County, north China‘s Shanxi Province, Aug. 10, 2024. Located on the bank of the Yellow River, Xuegong Village boasts over 333.3 hectares of Yellow River tidal flats and nearly 333.3 hectares of barren ditches. In recent years, the local community has integrated these lands to develop specialized aquaculture. The Yellow River tidal flats with lush aquatic plants provide excellent conditions for crab growth. 39-year-old Li Nan returned home to start a crab farming business four years ago. Farming crabs was not easy. In the first two years of his venture, due to immature aquaculture techniques, the survival rate of the crabs in his ponds was only about 30%. Through continuous exploration, the survival rate of the crabs he farmed increased significantly...、クレジット:Xinhua/ABACA/共同通信イメージズ

    Clear Lake Clouded by Algae

May 15, 2024 - California, USA - An algal bloom clouded the waters of California‘s Clear Lake in mid-May 2024. Bright green swirls were visible across most of the lake‘s area. The bloom may contain blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, as well as other types of phytoplankton; only a direct sample can determine the exact composition of a bloom. Cyanobacteria are single-celled organisms that rely on photosynthesis to turn sunlight into food, and some produce microcystin, a potent toxin that can irritate the skin and cause liver and kidney damage. Clear Lake is a naturally nutrient-rich, eutrophic lake that supports the growth of algae and aquatic plants. Located about 60 miles north of San Francisco Bay, it has long contained large algal populations, possibly since the end of the last ice age about 10,000 years ago, according to sediment cores...、クレジット:©NASA Earth/ZUMA Press Wire/共同通信イメージズ
