Perseid meteor shower in Santo Tome del Puerto, Segovia, Castilla y Leon, Spain.

August 12, 2024, Segovia, Castilla Y Leon, SPAIN: Meteors streak past stars in the night sky during the annual Perseid meteor shower above Santo Tome del Puerto, in Segovia, Spain,.The Perseids are an annual prolific meteor shower occurring in July and August. The event is often referred to as ââ¬Ëtears of Saint Lawrenceââ¬â¢ (or San Lorenzo) due to it happening so close to the San Lorenzo Saint Day. The mid-summer meteor shower shows around 200 meteors per hour travelling into Earthââ¬â¢s atmosphere and burning up at speeds of 50 kilometres per second. The meteorites are pieces of the 109P/Swift-Tuttle comet which have fallen off, a comet whose orbit passes Earth every year at the same time. The origin of the comet and its meteorites appears to be the Perseus constellation, hence the name ââ¬ËPerseidsâ (Credit Image: © Guillermo Gutierrez Carrascal/ZUMA Press Wire)、クレジット:©Guillermo Gutierrez Carrascal/ZUMA Press Wire/共同通信イメージズ

    Deciphering India‘s Luna Crater

Feb 24, 2024 - India - In the Kutch district of northwest India, a vast desert where salt is harvested in colorful rectangular ponds stretches to the Arabian Sea. In a neighboring grassland, a less conspicuous circular feature has attracted curiosity in recent decades. Scientists in India had suspected, but not confirmed, that an object from outer space made this mark on the landscape. Now, a geochemical analysis of the structure has revealed it contains the characteristic signatures of a meteorite impact. Impact craters on our planet are a relative rarity; fewer than 200 structures from around the world are confirmed in the Earth Impact Database. The number of craters is so modest in part because many of the meteorites that survive the trip through Earth‘s atmosphere ultimately splash down into water...、クレジット:©NASA Earth/ZUMA Press Wire/共同通信イメージズ

    Geminids Meteor Shower

A green meteor is being seen in the sky during the Geminid meteor showers in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka, on December 14, 2023. The Geminids are a prolific meteor shower caused by the object 3200 Phaethon, which is thought to be a Palladian asteroid with a ‘‘rock comet‘‘ orbit. This makes the Geminids, together with the Quadrantids, the only major meteor showers not originating from a comet. Dinosaurs Were Killed By Dust New Study Suggests

October 30, 2023: This image shows: The K-Pg boundary in North Dakota...Scientists have refined their theory as to the reasons for the dinosaursââ¬â¢ extinction - and it turns out they were killed by dust..The dust, from pulverised rock generated by the Chicxulub asteroid impact, likely played a dominant role in global climate cooling and the disruption of photosynthesis following the event. This is suggested by a new study published in Nature Geoscience, in which researchers in Belgium, notably from the Royal Observatory of Belgium (ROB), the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and the KU Leuven..The Chicxulub impact has long been thought to have triggered a global impact winter, which led to the demise of the dinosaurs and around 75% of species on Earth at the Cretaceous-Palaeogene (K-Pg) boundary 66 million years ago...、クレジット:©Cover Images/Cover Images via ZUMA Press/共同通信イメージズ ※United Kingdom Rights OUT
