January 15, 2022, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada: An extremely rare complete first edition of William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s First Folio sits behind glass at the Vancouver Art Gallery Jan. 15. This volume, featuring 36 of Shakespeareââ¬â¢s 38 known plays was recently acquired by the University of British Columbia through Christieââ¬â¢s New York with funding by a consortium of donors from across North America, including the federal Department of Canadian Heritage, with the aim of ensuring the cornerstone of English literature stays within public ownership. The book was published in 1623, seven years after Shakespeareââ¬â¢s death, at which time about only half of his plays had appeared in print.
