Scientists Uncover Mystery Of Strange Oxygen-Emitting Asteroid

March 10, 2022, United States: IMAGE CAPTION: COMET 67P/CHURYUMOV-GERASIMENKO AS SEEN BY THE EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCYââ¬â¢S ROSETTA SPACECRAFT IN MARCH 2015. COMET 67P WAS THE FIRST COMET EVER KNOWN TO EMIT MOLECULAR OXYGEN, A MOLECULE RARELY FOUND THROUGHOUT THE UNIVERSE BECAUSE OF ITS CHEMICAL REACTIVITY AND THE DIFFICULTY IN DETECTING IT. ..Story Caption: Scientists have discovered the mystery of an asteroid that appeared to be emitting oxygen..When the European Space Agencyââ¬â¢s Rosetta spacecraft discovered abundant molecular oxygen bursting from comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P) in 2015, it puzzled scientists. They had never seen a comet emit oxygen, let alone in such abundance. .Most alarming were the deeper implications: that researchers had to account for so much oxygen, which meant reconsidering everything they thought they already knew about the chemistry of the early solar system and how it formed..A new analysis, however, led by planetary scientist Adrienn Luspay-Kuti at the Johns Hopkins ...

Albert Einstein (1879-1955), Swiss-German physicist. Einstein‘s famous mass-energy equation resulted from his 1905 paper on Special Relativity. This paper, with his 1915 General Theory of Relativity, replaced the previously unshakeable Newtonian world view, rewriting the concepts of gravity, space and time. Early work on the photoelectric effect led to him being awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics. Emigrating to the USA in 1933, he worked at Princeton University. He encouraged the atomic bomb project, but later campaigned for nuclear disarmament.、クレジット:Science Photo Library/共同通信イメージズ

James Hiroto Nakano (1922-1990), Japanese-US smallpox researcher, analyzing data while seated at his desk. Nakano designed and directed the USA‘s CDC (Center for Disease Control) smallpox laboratory (completed in 1967) which later evolved into one of the world‘s primary smallpox reference centres. Electron microscopes were the primary method for rapid diagnosis of smallpox, surpassing other methods in speed and reliability. Nakano‘s work demonstrated that no reservoir of smallpox could be maintained in wild animals, and helped differentiate among various pox diseases including monkeypox. His main work was carried out between 1968 and 1985. Nakano became part of the World Health Organization (WHO)‘s global smallpox eradication effort. The CDC‘s prestigious James H. Nakano Citation for outstanding scientific paper, was established in his honour.、クレジット:Science Photo Library/共同通信イメージズ

    Leo Szilard, Hungarian-US physicist

Leo Szilard (1898-1964), Hungarian-US nuclear physicist and developer of the atomic bomb. Szilard, along with Enrico Fermi, patented the first nuclear reactor and built it in 1942 at the University of Chicago, USA. He was one of the founders of the WWII Manhattan Project, the effort to produce a nuclear bomb before the Axis powers. This led to the production of the first nuclear weapons. Realising their power, Szilard and several other scientists campaigned for the weapons to be used as deterrents only. 300,000 Japanese civilians were killed as a result of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.、クレジット:Science Photo Library/共同通信イメージズ

Karl Albert Ludwig Aschoff (1866-1942), German pathologist and physician. Aschoff spent most of his career at the University of Freiburg, working there from 1906. He studied the pathology of the heart, discovering structures (Aschoff bodies) that develop in the myocardium (heart muscle) during rheumatic fever. DNIPROPETROVSK At the opening of the exhibition “Declassified Memory“ in the Dnipropetrovsk Museum named after Dmytro Yavornytskyi, where archival documents declassified by the Security Service of Ukraine about one of the most tragic pages in the history of the Ukrainian people - the Holodomor of 1932-1933 - were presented, Serhii Kokin, deputy head of the branch State Archive of the SSU, spoke. In particular, he said that the events of those tragic years, related to the Holodomor, were hushed up by the Soviet authorities. And only later the truth about the victims among the population appeared in numerous publications and scientific investigations. But not all documents were available to scientists, historians and the general public. The exhibition of declassified SSU archival materials includes orders, directives, secret office documents and operational and statistical reporting of the State Political Department of the Ukrainian PCP …、クレジット:Ukrinform/共同通信イメージズ

Richard Zsigmondy (1865-1929), Austrian chemist. Zsigmondy‘s work on colloids won him the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1925. Having spent the early part of his career in Vienna, he was appointed Professor and Director of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry in Gottingen in 1907, where he remained until his retirement. Colloids are mixtures with particular chemical properties, and Zsigmondy‘s work on their heterogeneous nature by using optical techniques increased the understanding of sols, gels, fogs and foam. Albert Einstein (1879-1955), a physicist, received US citizenship from Judge Philip Forman. Einstein was born in Germany but renounced his citizenship in 1896, becoming a Swiss citizen in 1899 and, in 1940, after emigrating there in 1933, a US citizen. His mass-energy equation resulted from his 1905 paper on Special Relativity. This paper, with his 1915 General Theory of Relativity, replaced the Newtonian world view, rewriting our concepts of gravity, space, and time. Early work on the photoelectric effect won him the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics. Much of his later life was spent in opposition to the theory of quantum mechanics.、クレジット:Science Photo Library/共同通信イメージズ

Max Planck and Albert Einstein. Planck (left, 1858-1947) was a German physicist whose work led to the development of quantum theory. Einstein (1879-1955), a German- Swiss physicist, put forward relativity theory. In 1900, Planck proposed that radiation is emitted in discrete packets (quanta). This marked the start of modern physics. He received the Nobel Prize for physics in 1918. Einstein won this prize in 1921 for his 1905 paper on the photoelectric effect, the liberation of electrons from matter due to electromagnetic radiation. He also proposed the theories of special and general relativity, which changed our ideas about space and time.、クレジット:Science Photo Library/共同通信イメージズ

His interest in coloured glass led him to work on colloids which he continued to do as professor at Gottingen. In 1903 he made an ‘ultramicroscope‘ in which the sample solution is lit from the side. Colloid particles scatter the light and are seen as bright points, even if they are smaller than the resolving power of the microscope. Zsigmondy‘s pioneer studies on colloids did much to advance the understanding of sols, gels, fogs and foam, and was of great importance in biochemistry.
