    1975(昭和50)年7月19日、「海―その望ましい未来」をテーマに沖縄国際海洋博覧会が開幕した。本土復帰から3年を迎える沖縄の経済振興の狙いがあった。2日前には過激派がひめゆりの塔参拝の皇太子ご夫妻(現天皇、皇后両陛下)に火炎瓶を投げる事件も発生。入場者は半年間で348万人と予想を大幅に下回った。
