    パキスタンのイスラマバードにある国立農業研究センター(NARC)に車で入ると、一面の菜の花畑を通り過ぎた先に、広々とした小麦畑が目に飛び込んでくる。栽培試験用の畑で、品種ごとに標識が立てられており、中国と同国の研究者が共同で開発する小麦の新品種もここで育てられている。中国農業科学院作物科学研究所はパキスタンの関係機関とすでに10年余り研究を続け、同国のパキスタン人研究者をこれまでに9人育成してきた。同研究所は長年の協力関係を踏まえ、同国のカイディアザム大学やNARC、国際トウモロコシ小麦改良センターと共同で、中国・パキスタン小麦分子育種国際合同実験室を設立している。同研究所の何中虎(か・ちゅうこ)研究員は長期にわたり小麦の育種研究に取り組み、分子マーカー育種の分野で豊富な経験を積んできた。パキスタンでの取材に対し、「分子育種の新技術を用い、パキスタンの小麦育種レベルを向上させたい。特に耐病性を高め、現地の食糧の安全保障に貢献したい」と語る。合同実験室のパキスタン側責任者は、両国が共同で育成した研究者で、中国に十年以上住んで働いていた経験も持つオワイス・ラシード氏が務める。パキスタンは小麦消費大国であり、気候変動に適応した小麦の新品種を育てることが食糧の安全保障にとって極めて重要だと同氏は指摘する。実験室はすでに、同国北部地域での栽培に適した小麦を2品種を開発している。ラシード氏は「この2年、私たちは新しい小麦品種の試験を続けてきた。新品種の生産量はこの地域で元々栽培されていた品種に比べて8~10%多い。新品種の導入によって現地の小麦の増産と農家の増収が期待できる」と話す。何研究員によると、両国が共同開発した新品種は、現地の優良小麦品種と比べて成熟期においては大きな差がないが、背丈がやや低いことから倒れにくい。また分子マーカー技術を通じて中国の小麦品種が持つ黄さび病と赤さび病への耐性遺伝子をパキスタンの小麦品種に導入することで、高生産量と耐病性の効果を実現したという。ラシード氏によると、同実験室は人材の交流や育成も推進している。来月にはカイディアザム大学で小麦分子育種技術のトレーニングを実施し、同国の研究者50人近くに新技術を学ぶ機会を提供する計画だ。パキスタンの国立遺伝子先端生命工学研究所(NIGAB)のショーカット・アリ主任科学責任者は「食糧の安全 =配信日: 2024(令和6)年3月13日、クレジット...

    南太平洋のケルマデック海溝で深海調査を行っていた中国とニュージーランドの合同科学研究チームはこのほど、両国の科学調査員が有人潜水艇で同海溝の最深部に到達したと発表した。両国が合同で深海調査を行うのは初めてとなる。全水深有人潜水艇「奮闘者号」を載せた科学調査船「探索1号」は先月6日に中国の海南省三亜市を出発、同31日にニュージーランド北部オークランドの港から、最も深い地点で水深1万メートルを超える同海溝に向かった。今月25日に初回の任務を終え、オークランドの港に帰還した。調査を率いた中国科学院深海科学・工学研究所の彭暁彤(ほう・しょうとう)氏によると、奮闘者号は今回の調査で16回の潜水作業を行い、うち14回は作業水深が6千メートルを超えた。海溝軸に沿って最深部まで5回潜航し、うち2回は水深が1万メートルに達した。同海溝で有人深海潜水調査が広範囲にわたって体系的に行われるのは世界初という。調査で採集した深海の生物や岩石、堆積物のサンプルは、深海での生命の進化や適応メカニズム、沈積環境の変化、プレートの沈み込み帯、物質交換フラックスを理解するための重要な手掛かりになるとみられる。発表によると、今回の調査で、同研究所の鄧玉清(とう・ぎょくせい)潜航員とニュージーランド国立水圏大気研究所(NIWA)のカリン・シュナーベル研究員が、同海溝の最深部に到達した人類史上初めての女性となった。シュナーベル氏は今回の潜航について、不思議な体験だったと説明。「3時間かけて水深1万メートルまでゆっくりと潜航した。海底ではさまざまな未知の生物に遭遇。今回の調査で記録・撮影した多くの生物種が全くの新種だと信じている」と語った。(記者/郭磊、盧懐謙) =配信日: 2022(令和4)年11月30日、クレジット:新華社/共同通信イメージズ
