02 July 2020, Saxony-Anhalt, Gardelegen: The ruins of the Nikolai church at the edge of the ramparts. The church was built around 1200 as a Romanesque brick building and was first documented as a parish church in 1306. In the following centuries the Romanesque building was extended in Gothic style. On 15 March 1945 the church was destroyed in a bombing raid. At that time it was architecturally considered a three-nave, four-bay brick hall church with cross-ribbed vaulting. The Gardelegen ramparts were built in the 16th century to protect the city and are part of the network “Gartentr舫me - historische Parks in Sachsen-Anhalt“ (Garden Dreams - Historical Parks in Saxony-Anhalt) which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
