09 September 2020, Brandenburg, Halbe: The bell sculpture “The Mourner“ by Sergei Alexandrovich Cherbakov stands in the forest cemetery between trees. The cemetery at the edge of the community is one of the largest war gravesites in Germany and is maintained by the Brandenburg branch of the German War Graves Commission. Approximately 28,000 victims of the Second World War are buried on the site, most of whom died in the Halbe cauldron. In other graves, executed deserters of the Second World War, forced labourers and those who died in the Soviet special camp Ketschendorf between 1945 and 1947 are buried.
